Package Design


Package design is the most developed and creative in the field of graphic design and goes beyond the typical 2D print production. It explores the 3D collateral concepts for marketing products. In this course, students understand the magnitude of the 3D concepts for marketing such as, food packaging, coke products, and commercial displays for the entertainment industry. Students learn to tell a story through a product design that communicates to the consumer.

Course Outline

Module 1 | A Brief History of Package Design

Explore the back history of how we created packaging for products through time from the invention of paper, class, metal, and plastic.

Module 2 | Labels and Trademarks

In this lesson students understand the purpose of labeling a product and when the tagline was first introduced to the consumer.

Module 3 | Digital composition

Creativity and research plays a wonderful exploration for students developing a marketable product concept. Through field trips and sketches, students gain an awareness of the purpose for developing their digital compositions.

Module 4 | Container Packaging

In this week’s exploration, students understand many of the different types of packaging materials for developing a product.

Module 5 | Product Profile

Developing a product profile enlightens the student’s awareness of their marketing strategy. This helps them to develop more focused product designs as well as aesthetically pleasing compositions.

Module 6 | Flexible Packaging

Students continue their creative exploration by getting familiar with folding cartons and flexible packaging. This process helps them learn the best creative strategy for their product design.

Module 7 | Let’s Gets Started

After the student has a strong flexible packaging idea, the student will develop their own original pattern concept for their product.

Module 8 | Presentation is Everything

This final week the student will have completed their product. Now they will develop a portfolio presentation of all their hard work that showcases the entire creative process.

Course Instructor

William Morse William Morse Course Author / Instructor

William Morse is the Chief Executive Director of Arts Atelier 146. He has taught higher education for the past 25+ years building both graphic design and animation courses around the country for colleges and universities. He has built BFA programs for universities in Kentucky, Mississippi, Kansas, and Texas. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Florence Classical Arts Academy in Florence, Italy–the partner school of Arts Atelier 146. William is a graduate from Texas A&M University with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Art and Advertising. He has a MS (Master of Science) in Art from Texas A&M University and an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in 3D Animation & Visual Effects from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. William and his wife Dana love to travel and spend time with their three children. He loves teaching students and has helped to build Arts Atelier 146 as an industry standard art school in the state of Kentucky.

Assignments

Assignments will be given on a weekly basis. Students are recommended to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours a week reviewing lecture content and completing assignments.
