Production Modeling for Environments


In this course, students will model a 3D environment while learning the concepts, tools, shortcuts and workflows required to be successful in a production pipeline.

Jon Krummel has been working in animation for over 20 years, 13 of which were at the Walt Disney Animation Studio where he worked on The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Prep and Landing 2, and Wreck it Ralph before being promoted to Environment Modeling Supervisor for Frozen, Zootopia, and Wreck it Ralph 2. He also worked as Head of Environments on 2 theme park rides and an episodic for Disney+. Outside of Disney, Jon’s background as a generalist has allowed him to work for a number of studios large and small including: Skydance Animation, Film Roman, Halon, Cinesite, Pax TV, virtual3d, Bento Box, and Premise Entertainment, among others. Jon graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 2000 with a Bachelors degree in Media Arts and Animation and has been busy ever since, working, learning, teaching and striving to be better every day.

Prerequisites

Students will need a basic knowledge of the Maya interface.

Weekly Livestreams

Course Outline

Module 1 |

In this module, students learn the importance of understanding the context of the modeling project. The student will complete a block in for the modeling project they will be completing through the course.

Module 2 |

In this module, students will learn some great tips and tricks that will help them complete the process of breaking down their scene into separate assets and recompiling in a master scene using references.

Module 4 |

In this module, the use of high rez vs low rez modeling is discussed. Students continue to work on set dressing models and are guided through more highly useful Maya tools.

Module 5 |

In this module, students learn the importance of believability and the balance of good enough vs detailed in a production environment. The tips and tricks provided help students learn to create clean models for the production pipeline.

Module 6 |

In this module, students will finalize their set design and make a demo reel. Through this process they will learn the importance of making set design choices to meet deadlines.

Assignments

Assignments will be given on a weekly basis. Students are recommended to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours a week reviewing lecture content and completing assignments.
